Research of safety critical distance model for adaptive cruise control system

A safety critical distance algorithm based on adaptive cruise control system was proposed, in view of the shortcomings of the traditional safety distance model with few parameters and large deviations in vehicle distance control. When the critical distance was reached, the ACC control system sent a signal to the vehicle control unit to adjust the throttle opening and properly brake the wheels to keep the vehicle within safe critical distance range. In order to ensure the accuracy of the algorithm, CarMaker dynamic simulation software and Matlab / Simulink were used to establish a virtual simulation environment for algorithm verification. The results showed that the safety-critical distance model algorithm was reasonable, and the estimated safety-critical distance and deceleration values met the driver’s requirements for the vehicle. In addition, the algorithm can also evaluate the performance of the ACC system to reduce the overall development cost and cycle of the vehicle.
