Influence of Various Soil Type and its Properties on Filamentary Planar Coil based Magnetic Induction Communication System

Filamentary planar spiral type coils are used instead of non-planar coils for the magnetic induction (MI) based underground (UG) communication to improve the received power and enhance the transmission distance. By implementing the enhanced MI UG channel model, the effect of various soil types on the system performance is analyzed. It is found that the system performs well in medium with low electrical conductivity (loose sand) compared to medium with high electrical conductivity (clay). The percentage influence of the system, channel, and coil orientation on the system performance is calculated from which high influencing parameters are identified and its effect on received power is studied. The proposed system in the loose sand medium is compared with the existing system which shows a performance improvement of 66.37%. A transmission distance of 5m is achieved using the proposed system.
