Compact Dual-Band PIFA Antenna With Various EBG Structure for ISM and C Band Applications

A compact dual-band planar inverted F antenna (PIFA) has been investigated in this article. To enhance the antenna performance here three upturned T slot is used on the patch and three different shapes electromagnetic band gaps (EBG) structures namely square, circular and ring are used on the ground plane of the antenna. The proposed antenna covers the applications of Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM 2.4–2.5 GHz) band and Transport, mobile backhaul (6.425-7.125) GHz. The simulation results of the antenna are analyzed in terms of return loss, gain, directivity, bandwidth, and surface current distribution using Computer Simulation Technology Microwave Studio (CST MWS 2018) software. A comparison for the performance parameter of three EBG structures on the back part of the antenna is presented. The simulated results show that the antenna works with two different frequency bands of 2.428 GHz and 6.936 GHz which provides return loss of -23.98 dB at 2.428 GHz and -31.98 dB at 6.936 GHz. The antenna has an adequate gain and high directivity of 1.31dB and 6.32 dBi, a bandwidth of 73.1 MHz at 2.428 GHz, and gain and directivity of 5.09 dB, 10.9 dBi, and bandwidth of 237 MHz at 6.936 GHz.
