Closed-loop postoperative autotransfusion

Postoperative closed-loop autologous transfusion of blood is now in clinical use in the cardiac surgical intensive care unit of the authors' institution. The automated system requires minimal human intervention. The authors relate the need for autotransmission and distinguish among the different types. A description is given of the apparatus, software algorithm, and procedures that deliver postoperative autotransfusion with real-time feedback of relevant patient parameters. Postoperative closed-loop autotransfusion has proved to be a process with clinical benefits that requires limited time from the patient-care personnel. It increases patient safety and is cost-effective.<>
