Design and safety aspects of the nuclear reactors for Koeberg power station

After a brief introduction to nuclear power generation, Part 1 of the paper describes the basic concepts of the two types of light water reactors under consideration for Koeberg Power Station and discusses in more detail some of the important design aspects of the boiling water reactor (BWR). Part 2 describes the safety criteria employed in nuclear stations in general and in the BWR in particular, with emphasis on the containment of the fission products under normal operation, the limits adopted in connection with radioactive effluent and waste and the safeguards provided against melt out and release of radioactive material under disaster conditions.
