Maintenance and testing of modern winding plant

The object of the paper is to assist staff responsible for the maintenance and testing of modern winding plant and to enable them to appreciate the need for a carefully planned maintenance schedule. In general, fundamental principles of winder maintenance are given with certain specific details quoted for the purpose of illustration. Two main classes of the work Involved are dealt with: (1) Dynamic testing and adjusting of equipment, (2) Visual examination and replacement of worn or defective components. Particular attention is given to dynamic testing of mechanical braking systems and safety devices, which are often neglected, and emphasis is placed on maintaining the important aspect of day-to-day output.
