The development of an extended macro-assembler for the production of microprocessor software

This project began in early 1975 when it was realized that microprocessors had many possible applications. At the National Institute for Metallugy (NIM), microprocessor systems were being designed for use in process controllers^(1,2) and the software problem encountered there and elsewhere^(3,4,5,6) indicated that a software system for microprocessors⁽⁴⁾ was required. Two phases of development would be necessary, as follows:
