An Experimental Study of Denial of Service Attack Against Platoon of Smart Vehicles

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) brings a strong prospect for safer vehicles and roadways. We expect the eradication of accidents and fatalities on highways endangering precious lives. Platoons resolve the imminent dilemma of space crunch among other issues like speed, safety, economy, and efficiency. Studies have shown that even when all the environmental conditions are perfect, the smart cars can still face a hard time caused by malicious hackers. Technologies such as IoT, connectivity in automobiles, smart highways, and platoons are continually emerging and their implementation entails common challenges. Cyber-criminals' favorite, Denial of Service (DoS) and jamming attacks interfering the communication between cars and infrastructure, even for a split second can have serious consequences. The overall damage of such cyber assaults can be controlled with prompt detection. In this paper, we carried out an experimental study of DoS attacks against Platoon of smart vehicles. Firstly, we performed a comprehensive study on platoon architecture and candidate protocols essential for successful deployment of this architecture. Secondly, we studied the impact of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on salient protocols in platoon and proposed some viable solutions. Finally, we simulated representative attack scenarios and plausible solutions to the platoon architecture.
