Design and operating experience with large turbo-type A.C. generators

Summary The paper deals with some of the problems encountered in the design of the larger turbo-type a.c. generators which were built during the last 15 years, and those under construction at present. The main problem is to produce reliable, efficient machines with long life and requiring the minimum maintenance, at an economic price, and of weight and dimensions which are within the available transport limits. In many cases the latter item presents the greatest difficulty because it conflicts with the other main requirements. It is regretted that in many countries transport facilities have not kept pace with the demands of the times. Basically a turbo-generator consists of a stator, with its frame, core, and insulated windings, a solid steel rotor with its insulated windings and means for removing the heat losses from these parts. Most of the new problems encountered have been concerned with conditions which have arisen due to the increased capacity of units and the introduction of hydrogen cooling.
