Recent developments in A.C. Winder control

THE CHOICE OF THE MOTOR AND CONTROL SYSTEM for an electrical winder which years ago would have been dependent on the Ward-Leonard drive is no longer a foregone conclusion for any new winder installation. The Ward-Leonard system, rectifier winders or a.c. drives may be called for today depending on local conditions such as are dictated by depth of shaft, desirable pay load, load limits of the network, susceptibility to harmonics and voltage flicker, climatic conditions, capital costs of electric power, cooling water, buildings and foundations, arrangement of the mechanical installation and mounting of the winder, the types of brakes which may be applicable or preferred, skill of personnel and facilities for maintenance and many more factors must be taken into account if the most suitable solution is to be found for a given case.
