The conceivable future of telecommunications

When I was invited to come to South Africa and deliver this memorial lecture, my immediate sensations were those of pleasure and of a feeling of the great honour which had been done me, mingled however with surprise that I should have been selected by your Council for this undertaking. For this is the first time that I have visited this country, so that I come as a stranger; my only previous contacts with you have been the slender one of scientific correspondence and more intimate ones through South African students who occasionally have come to work with me in London. This situation is now remedied.
