The development of register-translators for use in large automatic telephone networks

The development of telephone systems throughout the last half-century has been noticeable for the increasing automatization of calls. At the beginning of the period all but a few local calls were made via one or more operators; at the end of the period some subscribers are able to complete almost every call automatically and only a small proportion of calls require more than one operator. This development is common to all the countries of the world though it has, of course, progressed to varying lengths.
