The theory and practice of electronic testing of winding ropes

Over the past few years, the South African mining industry has been actively furthering the use of electronic rope testing equipment based on the type described in previous papers. The results have continued to be promising and the number of ropes which are tested on a routine basis, with both the prototype and the new improved types of equipment, are continually increasing. At the time of writing, more than 500 ropes over one inch in diameter are regularly examined with electronic equipment every four months. With information coming in at this rate, it is not surprising that a considerable amount of experience has been obtained in a short time.
