Novel Uncontrolled 20-Pulse AC-DC Converters to Reduce Harmonics of the Excitation Current

Power electronic devices are prone to harmonics as they are non-linear solid state devices. In this research work, two novel 20-pulse passive AC-DC converters are proposed to limit total harmonic distortion (THD) content of the excitation or input AC current. Value of the input current THDs found are 6.52% and 6.57% for series connected and parallelly connected rectifiers respectively. As both of the designed converters are passive in nature so they doesn't need any type of extra gate pulse producing circuit. Thus this is a cost effective approach to limit the harmonics. Designed series connected rectifier have high voltage (≥ 1kV) applications where proposed parallel connected rectifier can be used where there is a demand of high current (≥ 100A). Moreover modified version of the proposed series connected 20-pulse converter can be used for HVDC generation. This paper also explains the working principle of the proposed rectifiers with proper figures.
