The modelling of terrain irregularities as applied in field strength prediction techniques

The paper presents a selection of models for paths and separate obstacles which have been successfully used by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) for field strength prediction in VHF and UHF broadcasting. The models are recommended and used by various organisations such as the CCIR (International Radio Consultive Committee), EBU (European Broadcasting Union) and BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). This particular selection is intended to be used with terrain data derived from maps preferably with a scale of 1:50000 or better. The methods based on these models are appropriate for long-term free-space, interference and diffraction field strength prediction.
