Coaxial-cable carrier telephone systems in South Africa

This paper describes the 960-channel, 4-mega-cycle coaxial-cable carrier telephone system and its application to certain routes in the Union of South Africa. A description of the cable and terminal equipment is followed by a discussion on the facilities provided by the system, the building accommodation, power and test equipment requirements and a brief reference to the special aspects of the installation, testing, performance and maintenance of the 600-channel, 2-6-megacycle system between Pietermaritzburg and Durban which is the first coaxial-cable system to be placed in commercial service in the Southern Hemisphere.
