Interface considerations for the wheelchair aerobic fitness trainer

The author previously described a device known as a wheelchair aerobic fitness trainer (WAFT). A description is given of hardware and software modifications that enable the WAFT's electronics to emulate digital and joystick controllers for most of the popular home computers (e.g. Apple IIe and Commodore 64) and video games (e.g. Atari 2600). This provides an exercise/training environment that could serve to increase the user's motivational level. The authors are currently exploring additional options to provide the user with graphic visual and auditory feedback that indicate their ability to control the speed and direction of their wheelchair.<>
