A graphical, representation of the operation of a tandem generator

This paper discusses the operation in parallel of two alternators driven in tandem. The set is installed in the Brak-pan station of The Victoria Falls amp; Transvaal Power Company, Limited, where one single cylinder type turbine, capable of developing a continuous maximum output of 20,000 kw. and a most economical output of 16,000 kw. when running at a normal speed of 3,000 r.p.m. is directly coupled to a 20,000 kVA generator known as the “A” unit, and coupled to the latter is another 20,000 kVA generator designated the “B” unit. Beyond the “B” unit and driven on the same shaft are two compound wound exciters, one for the “B,” the other for the “A” unit. The total overall length of the set from the extreme end of the turbine to the sole-plate at the exciter end is 63 feet 8 12 inches, and the average width across the sole-plate of a generator is approximately 12 feet.
