“Protective gear”

In contributing to this discussion, in the first place, .I think .Mr. Monk might make it quite clear in his reply that he only intended to touch upon one or two aspects of the somewhat complex problem of automatic protection. Quite obviously he designed his paper to be mildly provocative; I think he set out to draw opinions and arguments from the mining side of power supply on these fields. He has not been very successful up to date, because the discussion on his paper can only be described as scanty, and I wonder if I might be permitted to assist him in his attempts at provocation. I would first like to suggest that in any future papers he writes on the subject, in which he is virtually a specialist, he might be better advised to follow Mr. Heydorn's example and write a paper on a single aspect of the protection question. For instance, a review of modern methods and developments in the automatic protection of a single interconnected distribution network would, to my mind, be of great value and afford this Institute much useful information which to-day is probably on record in a number of papers read before various Institutes, but the information is difficult of access, and could with advantage be collected into a single paper, if only for record purposes.
