The congella power station of the electricity supply commission. a description and some operating expediences

At the time when the Electricity Bill of 1922 became law, the Durban Corporation were considering extensions to their electricity supply undertaking, and simultaneously the electrification of the railways from Durban to Maritzburg was being investigated. The Electricity Supply Commission, by virtue of the powers granted to it under the Act, proposed to erect a power station at Durban to meet the requirements of both the Corporation and the Administration Negotiations with the Durban Corporation reached a satisfactory conclusion, but the electrification of the railway line between Durban and Maritzburg did not materialise. The result was that the Commission proceeded with the planning of Congella Power Station alter a satisfactory agreement with the Corporation had been negotiated and a promise had also been obtained from the Administration that power would be taken from the Commission when the line to Maritzburg was electrified. The station was designed with this end in view.
