In reply to the discussion, the authors wish to thank those members who contributed so ably to it and for the constructive nature of the criticism offered, The reception of the paper and the healthy criticism has more than compensated the authors for the trouble which was taken in presenting it. Much of the discussion was of the nature of supplementary information, and hence does not call for particular reply. With regard to Mr. Pickles's remarks, the evaporation of 100,000 lbs. steam per hour assumed by him is not strictly correct, because this is the most economical evaporation, whereas the maximum evaporation is 120,000. The comparison would not be fair either unless the temperature of the gases after leaving the boiler were stated. Testing the boilers by the losses method is admitted by the authors in the paper to be in favour generally of the boilers, but only to the extent of between 1 and 1.5 per cent. For routine testing in the power station the losses method is simple and gives reliable information.
