Radio first came to this country in serious form in 1910 when the then Natal Administration decided on the erection of a Coastal Wireless Telegraph Station for communication with ships at sea. The site for the erection of the station had been selected by Mr. R. N. Vyvyan, an engineer of the Marconi Company, on the Bluff in Durban, a few hundred yards inland from the light-house.
