Design features of insulators and transformers which contribute to radio interffrence from power lines

This paper is based upon a thesis submitted to the University of Natal for the degree of M.Sc. in the Department of Electrical Engineering SUMMARY This paper deals with the investigation into the causes of radio interference radiated from power lines on the Natal Central System of the Electricity Supply Commission. It is shown that the interference is due to the ionization of small pockets of air associated with insulating material. The occurrence of highly-stressed air gaps on power systems is considered with respect to line insulators and transformers, and methods of testing for radio interference are suggested.
