The relative merits of frequency modulation and amplitude modulation as applied to a broadcasting service

This paper discusses the use of frequency modulation as a subsidiary transmission to the present medium wave broadcasting service. It is shown that frequency modulation has definite advantages over corresponding amplitude modulated systems, and particular emphasis is laid on the increased signal-to-noise ratio resulting from the use of frequency modulation. The paper discusses the inter-station interference for the two types of transmissions and the essential differences between frequency and amplitude modulated receivers and transmitters are given, with particular reference to equipment built by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
