The paper details briefly the Natal main line electrification at 3000 volts D.C, including a description of the type of locomotives in operation. No attempt is made to cover all aspects of loco motive maintenance, but rather those specific cases where difficulties were experienced in connection with maintenance or operation, after the locomotives had been in service for some time. The general routine maintenance arrangements are detailed briefly. The effect of accumulated dust on the operation of the equipment is discussed. Troubles experienced with the compressed air system are mentioned. Pantograph operation is discussed, covering the three types in use, with particular reference to contact strip wear. Failures due to insulation damage, resulting from lightning surges are discussed, indicating the difficulties and arrangements introduced to minimize the trouble. The operation of the motor-generator sets is detailed briefly, as well as protection of the motor-generator circuits. Main motor operation, with particular reference to fatigue fracture of armature shafts and copper conductors, is dealt with. Regenerative braking is outlined and the difficulties of ensuring proper balancing of the locomotives for regenerative output when working in multiple are detailed. The riding of the locomotives is discussed and the possibility of overcoming “ nosing,” particularly when the tyre flanges have become worn, is outlined.
