Influence of IP-network Performance on MPEG-Based OTT/IPTV Video Streaming

This article is devoted to the analysis influence of IP network impairment on OTT/IPTV video service based on unidirectional and bi-directional predictions during MPEG compression and contains the results of authors' research in this direction. The purpose of these studies is to find dependencies and estimate possible permissible level of impairments with minimal visibility to viewers of IPTV/OTT service using different streaming protocols and compression configuration. To implement this field study was carried out based on IP network and video streaming service with different video compression parameters and streaming protocols. As result of study, IPTV video service performance was estimated; possible ways of increasing its immunity to network impairments were proposed. The obtained results can be used during the technical maintenance and service implementations for IPTV/OTT based video transmissions, as well as during further research aimed at increasing the immunity of services of such type to network distortions without renewing related infrastructure.
