The amplidyne generator—its performance and design

The paper commences with a brief discussion on the desirability for high amplification and a low time-constant in control apparatus. Then the cross-field principle of operation of the amplidyne, its steady-state operation on D.C. and the effect of varying the compensation of the output stage are briefly analyzed. Both the transient response and the response to a.c. signals of the perfectly compensated machine are treated, as is the a.c. response of the imperfectly compensated generator. The effects of rocking the brushes and of chording the armature windings are briefly noted. Two types of stator construction are shown and discussed.
