Arc-suppression coils and their application on the systems operated by the victoria falls and transvaal power company, limited

The general problem of neutral earthing on a high-voltage network is briefly considered. The behaviour of a system earthed through an arcsuppression coil is studied for single-phase fault and the effect of coil tuning on the fault suppression efficiency of the coil discussed. Neutral voltages due to capacity unbalances and also the influencing effect of adjacent parallel lines are analyzed. Applications of arc-suppression coils to th 20-, 40- and 88-kV systems of the Victoria Falls and Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., are discussed and difficulties encountered with the application of unit coils to part of an 88-kV transmission network described. Statistics are given of the operating experience with the coils.
