Pathloss Modelling for Next Generation of Millimeter-Wave Communications

Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) technology is one of the promising approaches to overcome one of the worst wireless communications problems, which is the frequency band scarcity, as it will facilitate access to a wide range of frequency spectrum up to tens of Giga Hertz. This paper briefly discusses the utilization issues of millimeter waves for current and future wireless and mobile communications. Then it presents a new proposed pathloss model to predict the signal strength in millimeter-wave bands. The derived model is obtained via the least squares regression analysis of real propagation data. Numerical results show the validity and the close fit of the proposed model with the field measurements. Thus, this model can be used to attain an accurate prediction of the signal strength, which, of course, is an important task in any wireless backhauling or mobile network planning phase.
