Simulation of Stepper Motor Motion and Control

The main objective of this theoretical framework is to clarify the theory of the operation of a bipolar hybrid stepper motor. By applying suitable synchronous phase voltages to its two independent coils, the motion of the motor's rotor can be ensured. The rotor's angular displacement can be determined without any feedback signal. This is one of the major advantages of this type of motor. In control engineering terms, this is The open-loop control approach. Therefore, the task is how preparing those suitable synchronous phase voltages to control rotor angular displacement. A driver consists of two components a decoding circuitry and an actuator, was designed to produce the required phase voltages. The decoder provides sequencing logic control signals to the actuator. The actuator, which is a dual H-bridge, will feed prescribed phases to the motor's coils. Derivation of a mathematical model for the motor itself results in a nonlinear state-coupled system. The derived model along with the motor's driver is implemented in Matlab/Simulink environment. By this stage, we reach the complete picture of the system under study. At the end, the system needs to be simulated. A general simulations for the obtained system has been presented and discussed. The obtained results showed the stepping behavior in the rotor's angular displacements. The open-loop control approach was able to control the size of those steps at a certain level of accuracy. Also, the ability of the driver of controlling the direction of rotation has proved.
