New Feedback controller of an Implantable Pump for Heart Failure Patients by Using Recursive DFT

It is proposed to use a new feedback control method on a model of the integrated cardiovascular system and a left ventricular assist device. There are two subsystems in the system. one to monitor suction and another to act as a feedback controller The suction detection subsystem is based on the author's recursive DFT method. A constant set point is used as part of the feedback controller to compare with the calculated pulsatility control index in order to continuously update the pump current. The suggested feedback controller adjusts the pump motor current to fulfill the blood flow need of the patient's body at different physiological states when there is no suction in the left ventricle, as indicated by the suction detection subsystem. Using a lumped parameter circulatory system paired with a left ventricular assist device, the overall performance of the control system was investigated in simulations throughout a wide range of physiological circumstances. The controller was able to keep cardiac output within acceptable physiologic levels while avoiding suction, proving that the suggested control mechanism is feasible.
