The problems confronting the mines of South Africa in hoisting from great depths have, long been a subject of world-wide interest. The usual impression has been that these were largely of a mechanical nature, concerned mainly with such matters as the maximum praticable and economical hoisting depth in single lift, rope design and selection, rope safety factor, effective drum shapes and construction and others of like nature.
