Design and Simulation of Optical Fiber Communication Link by Ethernet Protocol using FPGA

The optical fibers have greater bandwidth as it uses the electromagnetic spectrum. The data such as picture, voice, and text is sent through optical fiber cable from one end to the other end using FPGA. Since the conventional FPGAs do not have the capability of electrical to optical, and optical to electrical conversion, a communication link using two FPGA with laser and receiver module has been connected by optical fiber communication links. The data framing have been carried out by developed Standard IEEE 802.3 Ethernet protocol. The RTL design for the transmitter and the receiver is designed by Verilog coding for the nexus 4 FPGA development kit and the code is synthesized, and the functionality has been verified. The maximum speed has been achieved by using nexus 4 FPGA kit which is suitable for the IEEE Ethernet Protocol. The optical transmitter and receiver is designed by the Optisystem software with co-simulation of the MATLAB Component. The operating frequency of 10 MHz, attenuation of 2 dBm, and distance of 0.2 km, the Q factor of 49.98 at the center wavelength of 1.551 um having a maximum power of -104.30 dBm are observed.
