TSDN-WISE: Automatic Threshold-Based Low Control-Flow Communication Protocol for SDWSN

The growing popularity of the Internet of Things (IoT) in recent years has necessitated the need to address the challenges of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Recently, Software-Defined Network (SDN) has emerged as a promising solution to most of the challenges of WSN, paving the way for the emergence of a new paradigm known as Software-Defined Wireless Sensor Networks (SDWSNs). However, the control overhead required to build the topology directly impacts the energy consumption in SDWSNs. Therefore, control traffic must be minimized. In this paper, we proposed an automatic threshold based routing protocol (TSDN-WISE) that forwards data and control messages based on the automatically calculated threshold value. To this context, we first presented a systematic architecture that adopts TSDN-WISE protocol. Then, we derived automatic threshold calculation using the network's data traffic obtained from the data server. The number of data that can pass through the channel without causing congestion is considered for derivation, to minimize the delay suffered by the packets. Experimental results show that the TSDN-WISE protocol extends the network lifetime by 65% on average compared to baseline protocols and reduces the control traffic overhead by 33.34%.
