A Security Authentication Method between the Charging Pile and Battery Management System

Controller area network (CAN) bus is used to communicate between the charging pile and battery management system (BMS). To improve the system security in charging, we propose an authentication method based on network to replace the traditional localized methods that have high demand on the computing power of the hardware. The complete authentication method includes two parts: position determination and identity authentication. We calculate the distance of the charging pile and BMS by their GPS data. If it is less than a threshold value, the position determination will be processed. Then, the identity authentication is started. The server produces a piece of 8-byte random verification code (RVC) and encrypts it. The RVC and its ciphertext are sent to the charging pile and BMS separately. BMS decrypts the ciphertext and transmits it to the charging pile via CAN bus. If the plaintext is consistent with the original RVC, the authentication will be successful. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can make real-time work on existing hardware. The security is improved and the efficiency is also considered. Besides, the method has a good performance in precision. The research can provide a reference for the security of electric vehicles charging.
