Performance Characteristics of the Darrieus Wind Turbine with Battery Charging

Performance testing of the Darrieus wind turbine with battery charging was conducted in this paper. The turbine was investigated in terms of starting and power extraction performance. The investigation was made consequentially by considering the rotor performance, the generator performance, the power transmission between them through gear systems, and the effect of the battery load. It was found that the performance is strongly affected by the matching between the rotor, the generator, and the battery load through the gear systems. From all tests conducted, the turbine with a gear ratio of 1:3.61 which is connected to a 24V battery exhibits the maximum power output of 13.9 Watt.
