Research on Lightning Protection of 220kV Substation with Long Cable Inlet Wire

Lightning protection of urban power grids is critical to the safe and stable use of electricity in cities. In the paper, the electromagnetic transient program (EMTP) was used to simulate the lightning protection of a 220kV substation reconstruction project with long cable inlet wire. Using the intersection method, the maximum value of the lightning invasion overvoltage on the substation equipment was calculated when the overhead incoming line connected to the cable was struck by lightning. The internal and external insulation levels of the substation equipment were checked. The simulation results show that the overvoltage exceeds the insulation level of the substation equipment without the arrester installed next to transformer, so it is necessary to install the arrester on the transformer side. The research results can be used as reference for engineering design.
