Classification Scheme of Work-Related Accidents in a Ready-Mixed Concrete Company

The study analyzed 84 work-related accidents from 2018 to 2020 in a ready-mixed concrete manufacturing company in Qatar. A coding scheme was utilized to analyze each accident in terms of factors such as employee characteristics (age, tenure, employment type, and shift), injury characteristics (injured body part and nature of injury), and accident characteristics (location, severity, accident type, activity type, accident cause, and accident root cause). Results from frequency distribution showed that regular employees aged between 25 and 44 years old were mostly involved in accidents, with hand/arm and leg/foot being mostly injured. Majority of accident types were struck by an object (44%), slip, trip or fall on same level (23.8%), and caught in between objects (17.9%). In addition, more than 71% of the accidents were attributed to unsafe behavior, which was highly associated with improper use of PPE. The study is beneficial for ready-mixed concrete companies in understanding accident characteristics to be able to develop appropriate solutions to prevent accident recurrence.
