Feasibility and analysis of MMC-based UHVDC for a case study of Pakistan

In residential and industrial areas AC is mostly used because it is easy to step up to higher voltage levels using the transformers. But AC is expensive when the transmission distance is greater than 500 kilometers or above and AC has limitations to transmit power at longer distances. High Voltage DC (HVDC) has no limitations of transmission distance. HVDC technology is a technology to transmit bulk power at longer distances. The purpose of this research is to transmit power of 4000MW from Matiari (Sindh, Pakistan) to Lahore (Punjab, Pakistan). Mostly load centres in Pakistan are situated in the centre of the country while sources of power are situated in the North and the South regions of the Pakistan. This research comprises of economic and feasibility analysis of UHVDC for a project named as Matiari. This analyses the HVDC and UHVDC. Simulations and experimental results are carried out by using MATLAB (Matrix Laboratory). To transmit power Bipolar links are adopted. Eleven levels modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology is adopted to convert power. In case of Matiari rectifier end will be in Matiari and inverting end will be in Lahore. The THD analysis of 3-level VSC and Eleven levels MMC is analyzed using the FFT analysis. The inverter side faults are also analyzed.
