Walking Distance Estimation Using a Shank-Mounted Inertial Measurement Unit and Vertical Distance Sensor

This paper investigates whether adding a vertical distance sensor to a shank-mounted inertialmeasurement unit can improvewalking distance estimation accuracy. Some important features that can be extracted from the vertical distance sensor and a gyroscope were proposed, and the model was validated with personalized and generalized parameters. Results showthat the vertical distance sensor is unnecessary for personalized model, but can retain the estimation accuracy of generalized model at 96%. As a comparison, many existing methods yield high accuracy for personalized model, but some has the accuracy reduced by 5-10% for generalized model.
