A Hybrid RSS+AOA Indoor Positioning Algorithm Based on Visible Light Communication

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) were largely utilized as a means for illumination. Taking advantage of LEDs illumination to transmit information through visible light allow for the up-rise of Visible Light Communication (VLC) as a common approach to wireless indoor navigation. Traditional indoor positioning algorithms are usually built on radio signals but they can be a subject of interference due to their capability of permeating walls. In contrast, having VLC enforced in indoor positioning allow for the advantage of absent electromagnetic interference and greater accuracy. In the following paper, received signal strength and angle of arrival techniques are joined to form a hybrid algorithm to locate the remote receiver position. Unique frequency address (F-ID) is used to modulate the LED transmitters so that inter-cell interference is overcome. To gauge the position of the receiver, Weighted Least Squares (WLS) methods are acquired. The paper verifies that using RSS and AOA methods is sufficient and more accurate in comparison to only range-based methods by resulting in a 0.50 cm mean location error.
