Novel Transmitter Designs for Variant Signed Quadrature Space Modulation Techniques

Recent works in the field of space modulation hardware have demonstrated the ability to realize different implementations using the RF-switch. The existing family of implementations, referred to at space modulation techniques (SMTs), offers a variety of realizations that can fit different application needs. Generally, higher spectral efficiency is attained while power consumption, cost, and receiver computational complexity are traded off for variant configurations. As well, all SMTs introduced to-date achieve realizations through a single spatial dimension, where implementations transmitting only spatial symbols do not require an RF-chain. A recently introduced new technique called signed quadrature spatial modulation (SQSM) adds a second spatial dimension that increases the spectral efficiency without the need for nonspatial symbols. In this article, novel hardware design models based on SQSM are introduced adding more techniques to the family of SMTs. The introduced models are compared in terms of cost, power, and computational complexity against quadrature space shift keying that has shown the most favorable traits in past comparisons against other SMTs.
