Experimental Study on Improving Properties of 5083 Al-Mg Alloy by Deep Cryogenic Treatment

The effects on the time of deep cryogenic treatment for mechanical properties and hardness of 5083A1-Mg alloy were studied. The study shew that the tensile strength of 5083A1-Mg alloy increased with the prolong of the time of deep cryogenic treatment within 0~72 h. The time of deep cryogenic treatment was too long, and the strength of the tensile strength of the alloy was no good. Comprehensive analysis of the experimental results revealed that the best time of treatment for deep cryogenic treatment to improve the performance and hardness of the alloy was 12~24 h. The mechanism of increase strength and hardness of alloy was that in the process of deep cryogenic treatment, the matrix structures of the alloy were caused by lattice distortion, dislocation propagation and winding, meanwhile, Al₃Mg₂ phase precipitated dispersively.
