The Realization of Digital Design from Sketching to AR Presentation: Taking the Product Design of “Old-style Ammunition Box” As an Example

Research purpose: product design is a process of technology and art interaction to promote innovation. It is not easy to communicate with customers in an all-round way only through sketches and rendering effect drawings. In order to improve the efficiency of communication with customers, augmented reality(AR) technology is introduced into the product display. Taking the product design of “old-style ammunition box” as an example, this paper studies the whole process of digital design from creative sketch to AR display, and finally presents the product to customers in the form of AR interactive visualization. In addition, there are more theoretical studies on the application of AR technology in the field of product design, but less practical operation. Research methods: this paper takes the product of “old-style ammunition box” as an example, from drawing design sketches, creating models with Maya, optimizing models, baking maps and mapping with Substance Painter, rendering output of product effect drawings and exporting AR files using Toolbag Marmoset, and finally showing augmented reality in Adobe Aero and Win10 3D viewers. Research conclusion: taking the design process of a product from scratch as an example, this paper fully describes the actual production process from creative design to AR display. Using AR technology, the product is integrated into the actual application scene, the three-dimensional product is presented to customers intuitively, the efficiency of communication with customers is improved. Customers can participate in the improvement and modification of products, the user's experience is improved, and the performance effect is enhanced. The method can also be transplanted and applied to the fields of scientific experiment, educational visualization, entertainment, telecommuting, collaborative office and so on.
