Effects of Varying Blue and Red-light Ratio as Artificial Lighting on Yerba Buena in Indoor Farming Using a Reconfigurable System

Demands for modern farming systems and solutions have been increasing over the past years to accommodate the growing population in urbanized areas. High-end indoor farms that incorporated modern technology have become comfortable with the idea of using red and blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as a primary lighting system. However, little is known on the effect of varying blue and red-light ratio in the cultivation of Yerba Buena in terms of water content. The proposed device in this study dealt with 7:3, 16:2, 5:1, and 8:4 red-blue light ratio. Based from the results of the experiment conducted in this paper fresh weight and dry weight of mint plants on lighting conditions produced average water content values, 70.8463% (7:3), 58.704% (16:2), 36.4418% (5:1), and 26.2725% (8:4), demonstrating that the ratio of red and blue light affects the growth of mint plants in terms of water content; specifically, the 7:3 RB ratio produced mint plants that are more drought-resistant due to having more water content than the other mint plants.
