Influence of Human Core Temperature on Tissues Heating During Transcutaneous Energy Transfer

Inductive energy transmission to implantable medical devices is one of the most popular methods of powering implants. However, the problem of surrounding tissues heating is preventing the development and popularization of this promising energy supply method. An increase in human body temperature can also complicate this situation. The modeling-assisted study of human tissues temperature increase during wireless energy transfer with focus on core body temperature are presented at this paper. It was found that tissues heating caused by the operation of this system with an output power of 0.5 W can reach 40.5 °C in the case of core body temperature of 39 °C. Exposure of this temperature to tissue can result in first-degree burns within 28 hours of continuous operation.
