Improving Handling of Shunt-Reactor Effects during Fault with Focus on Protection Devices

In this paper, the application of the shunt-reactor on the line, its advantages and disadvantages are discussed with relevant calculations and simulations. The paper also presents modeling, dimensioning and location issues of shunt-reactors. This depth is necessary for the understanding of problems which can occur in protection devices. The paper proposes possible solutions of these issues and presents the derivation of the proposed approach. Application of the described solution guarantees more reliability of protection operation on lines with shunt reactors.
