Automatic Voltage Regulator System with State-Feedback and PID based Sliding Mode Control Design

This paper presents the two different Sliding Mode Controller (SMC) design methods for an Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) system. The design parameters of SMC controllers have been tuned with the help of Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed control design has been tested after comparing its transient performance with the conventional PID controller. Afterwards, the robustness of both SMC design algorithms has been evaluated after considering parameter sensitivity and external disturbance in the AVR system modelling. Based on the extensive simulation-based analysis it has been validated that both design methods give excellent transient response characteristics and robust performance, and PID-based SMC design method gives slightly better robustness when compared with state feedback-based SMC design method.
