A Discrete Wavelet Transform and Rule Based Decision Tree Based Technique for Identification of Fault in Utility Grid Network with Wind Energy

An algorithm which uses discrete wavelet transform (DWT) in conjunction with rule based decision tree (RBDT) is introduced in this paper. Algorithm is aimed to recognize faults incident on utility grid network with wind energy. This approach provides effective protection to the network against faults with high wind energy penetration. Examined faults include fault on all phases and ground (LLLG), fault between two phases and ground (LLG), fault on two phases (LL) and fault on one phase and ground (LG). Proposed technique processed the current using DWT up to fourth decomposition level by the use of dB4 mother wavelet for computing a fault index (FI). Highest magnitude of this FI is considered as input to classify the faults using RBDT. Algorithm effectively identified and classified the faults in network of utility grid with wind energy penetration and also discriminate healthy phases from faulty phases.
