DoA Estimation on A MIMO Handset

This paper describes Direction-of-Arrival (DoA) estimation on a Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) enabled handset. A 4-port antenna system is used in a realistic handset and all the electromagnetic effects are taken into consideration, including antenna terminations and the user. The Polynomial Root Finding (PRF) DoA estimation technique for uniform linear arrays is adapted to address the naturally irregular grid of antenna elements in a realistic handset. This adaptation is accomplished in two separate ways; via Manifold Separation Technique (MST) and via Gaussian Processes Regression (GPR). Simulation results show reasonable DoA estimation accuracy even with few calibration data.
